About Kids Camp
at The Icelandic Horse Farm
Question: Is there any way to have more fun than going to a summer riding camp?
Answer: Yes, of course — by going to a riding camp with ICELANDIC HORSES!!
Half a dozen 9-11 year old local Vernon kids were treated to the ultimate camp experience this past June. Patiently led by Mandy Pretty they spent 5 days learning all there is to know about horses, starting with the basics like haltering, cleaning feet and brushing, anatomy and horse colors to more complicated groundwork exercises and riding skills. Needless to say riding was the highlight of each day and the horses, many of which had not been around kids before, step up in a major way. They lowered their heads into the halters and stood patiently while every last speck of dirt was picked out of their feet.
Those kids that just wanted to race around the rack had to master a complicated trail course design, turning through the labyrinth etc, to earn a fast round on the track.
Games on horseback were a welcome treat as well as the ultimate reward, a trail ride at the end of the clinic. Several of the youngsters wanted to take the stallion out on the trail because he was so pretty, but that special treat is many clinics away. One little girl showed all five gaits to her parents when they came to visit, needless to say, she is hooked.
